Here they fought! Italy 1943-45

ITALY 1943-45 THE REPORTAGE LAST CHAPTER

Italy 1943-45 is the last chapter of Here they fought! It is an itinerary to rediscover the places of the Italian Campaign that started with the landing of Sicily in July 1943. It is a photographic exhibition that crosses Italy from south to north following the ridges of the Apennines.

FORGOTTEN STORIES

On 10 July 1943, three years after Italy’s declaration of war on France and England, a huge fleet appeared off the coast of Sicily. This year marks the eightieth of what was the landing of the first foot to free Europe from regimes. WWII devastated Italy and left traces everywhere. Traces that have gone into oblivion and yet are serving as an important warning.

BATTLES AND MASSACRES

Italy was crossed by one of the hardest periods in its history. Huge landings on its coasts, battles on impregnable mountains, defensive lines crossing Italy from the Tyrrhenian to the Adriatic Sea.

The Nazis gave tenacious resistance and committed heinous crimes against humanity: Fosse Ardeatine, Marzabotto, Sant’Anna di Stazzema are just some of the names where hundreds of harmless and innocent civilians were massacred. Events which, unlike the Great War, also hit the civilian population much more violently.

Italy 1943-45 retraces those stages and follows in the footsteps of what history has left still visible.

THE EMOTIONAL IMPACT

The visitor can enter the maze of dark pages, where the human being has been prooved. It’s a path of remembrance with a great emotional impact to better understand our recent history and what we live nowadays.

ITALY 1943-45 REMEMBERING The VICTIMS

In field explorations the author found himself in front of Fallen from all over the world, creating infinite meditative moments. This exhibition is dedicated to them and to all the victims of war and regimes.
